Black Cat Barber & Salon
Let Gig Harbor's top real estate agent, Paige Schulte, walk you through town and introduce you to the small business owners of Gig Harbor. Gig Harbor boasts a vibrant downtown scene lined with local business owners along with delicious eats from Uptown to Downtown Gig Harbor.
Stewart Wentworth was in the punk scene during his teenage years and spent hours hanging around tattoo parlors and barber shops where the presence of music, art, storytelling, and community was intrinsically part of the culture. It left an indelible mark in Stewart’s heart. He put himself through cosmetology school while simultaneously honing his skills as an artist and showing and selling his paintings in Seattle. Stewart’s wife Amelia had grown up in Gig Harbor and in 2018 the couple, along with their two boys, decided to put down their roots here where Stewart opened Black Cat Barber & Salon. The name harkens back to Stewart’s days spent in tattoo parlors where the crawling black panther is a traditional American tattoo icon.
Black Cat offers men tailored modern cuts and classic styles in a comfortable and cool environment. You can shop the offered array of fine grooming products from brands like Victory Barber & Brand, Firsthand Supply, and Fellow Brand. Because of his passion for art, Stewart has designed Black Cat to also serve as a platform for local creatives by showcasing art and featuring local makers. The barber shop hosts fundraisers and is working on holding events such as a vinyl listeners club and painting sessions. But what makes Black Cat Barber & Salon truly unique is the intentional care for each client that Stewart and his team of vibrant and creative individuals bring to the community.
Black Cat opened during the pandemic when many people struggled with stress and isolation. Understanding that the most valuable part of his industry is the relationships that are built over time between stylist and client, Stewart was determined to meet people on a deeper level. He pursued training in providing mental health support from behind the chair and subsequently led a fundraiser to provide training to other barbers and stylists in our area. The training educated barbers on how to better show up and be present by listening from behind the chair, recognizing signs of mental health struggles, and adapting conversations to show each client they have purpose. At Black Cat Barber & Salon you will always feel seen, valued, and loved.
