How To Get Kids Involved In Holiday Giving

At the holidays I know a lot of kids are excited about what they’re going to GET, but how about helping them get excited about what they’re going to GIVE? Gig Harbor is not only a wonderful place to live, it’s also a supportive community with lots of opportunities to assist our neighbors around us. Read on for a few ways to inspire the kiddos in your life to help spread some holiday cheer this season.

COMMUNITIES IN SCHOOLS OF PENINSULA

The annual CISP gift drive is here! All you have to do is contact them to be matched with a specific student request and then deliver the requested gift by Thursday, December 14th!

GIG HARBOR PENINSULA FISH FOOD BANK

Through Tuesday, December 12th, the food bank’s toy drive is accepting new and unwrapped toys for kids aged 0 to 17 as well as other items like blankets, coats, and backpacks (donations of wrapping supplies are always appreciated, too!). You can also contribute through their Amazon wish list and have it sent directly. Here are some gift ideas for all ages to get you started, and the website has information on donation days, times, and locations.

LIGHTED CAR PARADE & SANTA’S VILLAGE

As part of Gig Harbor’s annual Lighted Car Parade on Saturday, December 16th, there will be a food and toy drive to benefit the local Gig Harbor Peninsula FISH Food Bank. Attendees are encouraged to bring donations of non-perishable food, a new and unwrapped toy, or personal care items.

SANTA’S CASTLE

Located on Joint Base Lewis-McChord, the goal of Santa’s Castle is to help make Christmas possible for Washington military families who are going through financial hardships. Multiple businesses around town have a donation box where you can drop off new, unwrapped items such as toys, board games, books, or stocking stuffers until Monday, December 4th. Or, for more gift ideas, check out the wish lists provided under the “Give” tab on the organization’s website.

TOY RESCUE MISSION

The Toy Rescue Mission exists to bring joy to underprivileged children as well as seniors in care facilities through donations such as toys and stuffed animals. While the mission serves Pierce County year-round, their Christmas Program is their largest of the year and they can always use additional donations of new or gently-used items. Read more on their website about specific donation requests.

TOYS FOR TOTS

Started by the U. S. Marine Corps Reserves, Toys for Tots is another great way to make Christmas possible for less fortunate children. There are multiple drop-off spots throughout Pierce County, and the location in Gig Harbor will be accepting donations of new and unwrapped toys until Tuesday, December 5th
