How To Hire A Contractor by Alinda Morris
If you are considering a home renovation or any home improvement project, you will need to hire a contractor. Read on for some expert advice on how to make things go as smoothly as possible.
Identify Your Needs and Have a Plan
You will need to provide the contractor with a scope of work and a design plan. This allows them to get an accurate budget and timeline. Most contractors do not offer design or product selections, so the more information you provide the easier the process will be. If you do not really know what you want or if you are overwhelmed by the process, consider working with an interior designer or industry professional. An interior designer can assist you in making designs and they can communicate those decisions to your contractor. Our firm provides project drawings and a complete specification package for each project so contractors can give an accurate estimate and project timeline.
Finding the Best Fit
Start with recommendations. Ask your friends and family, do an online search, or check with the Master Builders Association for a list of members in your area. General contractors specialize in specific projects, like remodeling or painting houses, while others are multifaceted. If you are doing a kitchen remodel you will want a contractor that specializes in kitchens. If you are considering a large project, you want a team that can easily manage your project. The next step is to request a phone interview (scroll down for some sample questions!). Most qualified contractors are happy to answer questions and they should be willing to provide recent references. Based on the phone interviews, pick three or four contractors to meet with for estimates and further discussion.
Do Your Homework
Check their qualifications. How long have they been in business? Verify the contractor has an active license, and ensure they are bonded and insured for damages that may occur.
