Local Charities That Need Your Donations the Most!

Are you wondering how you’re going to make room for your new back-to-school and fall purchases?  You could spend beautiful summer days listing them for sale OR you could pay it forward! Gig Harbor and the surrounding areas have plenty of charitable organizations that can help you do just that. They’re dedicated to ensuring that your gently used items find their way to families who need them the most. You’re not just cleaning out the clutter when you donate. The items that once “sparked joy” for you and your family members could bring the brightest smile to someone new. Please consider making someone’s day by donating to some of these altruistic organizations:

Food Backpacks 4 Kids

∙      Better Hurry! August 11th is the donation cut-off date for their 5th Annual FREE Community Clothing Drive and Give-Away.

∙      With 10 convenient locations for donation drops, they have made it so easy for you!

∙      There is a need for gently used or new clothing, shoes, and accessories, especially for men and children.

Aside from this clothing drive, Food Backpacks 4 Kids operates year-round. They fill backpacks full of food each week for families who need it the most. This is an incredible organization to donate time, money and/or food to throughout the year. Get the whole family involved!

FISH Foodbank

This volunteer led and run organization began in 1976 with the ongoing motto “Neighbor Helping Neighbor.” Since then, they have continued to lend a neighborly hand and supportive smile.  With over 200 volunteers they serve over 650 families per month with food each month.

Gently used clothing and household items are open to clients to take home on their regular shopping days.  The foodbank also maintains a “wish list” so that items continue to be filled as needed for their clients.  And of course, they are always accepting food and cash donations during business hours.

Be sure to check out their donation lists and read the inspiring FISH Tales that involve a community working together in kindness to bring comfort to those most needing it. For the warmest welcome, bring your donations to the food bank during business hours.

If this post has in any way inspired you to donate more than your gently used items, there are plenty of local benevolent organizations and foundations that rely heavily on monetary donations to make a positive impact in our community:

New Phoebe House Association:

This incredible non-profit organization gives mothers and children impacted by chemical dependency, homelessness, and trauma a holistic approach to a new beginning. Their services include housing, support, and treatment as they help mothers achieve and maintain safe reunification through clean and sober living, healing, and self-sufficiency.  Your donation and support will go a long way for these families.

Permission to Start Dreaming Foundation:

This foundation truly understands the impact of trauma on our nation’s veterans and first responders.  They provide workshops, support Huddles and warrior PATHH training to support these brave community heroes in the Pacific Northwest. Your donation will help these community members and their families on their road to post-traumatic growth.

Greater Gig Harbor Foundation:

For 15 years this foundation (GGHF) has worked to support our community through arts and culture, education, parks and environment, recreation, and social capital.  The pandemic posed many challenges in these areas. Your donation will help our community overcome and continue to thrive in these areas.

Harbor Hope Center of Washington:

This forward-thinking organization works hard to break the cycle of homelessness among Washington’s youth. They apply a holistic approach to foster independent living for those at-risk.  Your donation could help a young adult start a life they have always dreamed of for themselves.

Believe it or not, the list goes on. These are just a few of the many local charitable organizations you can familiarize yourself with.

Karma can be so beautiful when we invest time, love, and resources within our community!
