The mission of Food Backpacks 4 Kids is to meet the nutritional needs of hungry and food-insecure children and families living on the Key Peninsula and in the Gig Harbor area. It began twelve years ago when the company’s two creators sent out nine backpacks of food its first week. Since its inception, Food Backpacks 4 Kids has evolved into an organization with a small, driven staff, an army of dedicated volunteers, and a multitude of supportive neighborhood partnerships. They currently serve an average of 200 families with 550 children per week through their FB4K Family Pantry where families shop for their own groceries that include fresh produce, dairy, meats, and a wide variety of nonperishable items. They also serve another 150 children with food backpacks that contain child-focused food like peanut butter, granola bars, soup, fruit snacks, and oatmeal.

Food Backpacks 4 Kids has made a concerted effort to creatively adapt to challenges and expand their opportunities to serve and support local children and families effectively in a variety of ways. Within the last few years they have added food pantries in local middle schools and high schools, a summer lunch program, and most recently a delivery service. Food Backpacks 4 Kids also provides local families access to free clothing, books, prepared meals, firewood, and art projects. Food Backpacks 4 Kids has given away over 1.1 million pounds of nutritious food to children and their families in our region.

Food Backpacks 4 Kids is an organization that is building a culture of kindness and community care. They collaborate with local businesses, nonprofits, teens, and families to offer the opportunity for people of all ages to get involved, give back, and do great things that benefit some of the most vulnerable among us in an essential way.
