Gig Harbor Dragons

Let Gig Harbor's top real estate agent, Paige Schulte, walk you through town and introduce you to the small business owners of Gig Harbor. Gig Harbor boasts a vibrant downtown scene lined with local business owners along with delicious eats from Uptown to Downtown Gig Harbor. Read on to hear more about how Gig Harbor Dragons got started here in the harbor.

A dragon boat is a long narrow boat that has 10 or 20 paddlers, a steersperson to guide the boat, and a drummer in the bow to help the paddlers keep a steady rhythm in their strokes. Dragon boat racing is a popular sport in maritime communities and had its origin over 2,500 years ago in southern China. When a novice group of Gig Harbor paddlers expressed an interest in dragon boat paddling and racing in 2014, Ron Roark at the Gig Harbor Marina and Boatyard offered to buy a 20-person dragon boat and store it at the marina. PenMark Parks partnered with the group and now, seven years later, the organization has multiple boats, dozens of members, and several medals to its name.

The Gig Harbor Dragons have recreational and competitive paddling teams that provide you with instruction, moral support, and fun while teaching technique and camaraderie. The team focuses on building endurance, synchronizing all paddlers in powerful, efficient strokes, taking part in regional competitions, and traveling together all while encouraging their core values of friendship, good sportsmanship, and teamwork. Practices, which are held four times a week all year long, are open to both men and women and are run by volunteers, trained steerers, and coaches. As a member you can choose how often you want to paddle. The Gig Harbor Dragons welcome and include all interested paddlers, both competitive and recreational.

Members of the Gig Harbor Dragons actively engage in the community by hosting team building events for local schools and organizations, volunteering at and competing in regional competitions, hosting the Dragon Flea Market, participating in the Maritime Festival Parade, and volunteering for various community events.
